KANNAZUKI The Month Without Gods

In the video essay »KANNAZUKI: The Month Without Gods«, I focus on two trips I took in September and October 2020 to the NW and SE of Greece. Both trips are part of an ongoing project, which involves traveling and object making and aims to visualize connections between Greece and Japan. I concentrate on three main themes: volcanoes, mythology and the act of transcription in the work of Lafcadio Hearn (1850 – 1904), Japanese writer of Greek-Irish descent. On the first trip, I drove to the island of Lefcada to trace the birthplace of Hearn and then travelled to Epirus to visit the Acheron temple of Necromancy. On the second trip, I drove to the volcano of Methana. I juxtapose images from Greece and Japan, talk about the trips, and describe how the experience feeds my artistic practice and vice versa.

I contemplate on the analogies between preparing and performing a trip and working on an art piece in the studio. Both actions involve choosing destinations, materials, and concepts, research, budgeting, timing, comparing itineraries or methods, and drawing out a detailed plan.
